28 June 2023: The 80th Annual Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture took place in June 2023. Guest keynote speakers Professor Richard Levy (Environment and Climate Theme Leader at GNS Science) and Professor Tim Naish (Antarctic Research Centre, Victoria University) showed compelling data showing the impact of sea level rise in Nelson and throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. This was followed by supporting presentations from Dr Anna Berthelsen and Jacqui Stuart who discussed their climate change work at Cawthron.

12 April 2023: Rootstocks are an essential but poorly understood component of winegrowing in New Zealand. Rootstocks can confer favourable properties on the grafted plant, including insect resistance, tolerance of soil biotic and abiotic conditions, and other impacts on the scion. However, the industry does not have robust knowledge relevant to local conditions in order to make informed choices about the best rootstock options.

10 January 2023: In August 2022, devastating floods hit the top of the South Island, destroying aquatic life in its rivers and estuaries. Journalist Alexa Cook from TV3's Newshub interviewed scientists from the Cawthron Institute about the ongoing impact from the event, which is believed to have killed 80 percent of the fish in Nelson's Maitai River.

BRI is developing a research programme, Next Generation Viticulture, to perform a first-principles re-design of how the industry approaches grape canopy management. The programme aims to increase productivity while enhancing wine quality and environmental integrity, shifting the economic balance for the industry and future-proofing our vineyard investments.
